The Re-Refinished Table- ORC Week 5

Ahhhhhh! It’s Week 5 of the One Room Challenge, which means the big reveal is next week! I’ve made good progress over the past week, but I’m still nervous about finishing on time.

OK, let’s talk about what I finished this week and what’s still left to-do. My boyfriend mounted the metal cup rack on the wall and now I just need to fill it up with my ironstone cup and creamer collection. I also patched up the nail holes in the wall and touched up the paint. I love the cup rack, but I think the wall needs something else…it’s never ending!

I also hung some artwork, although I consider this more of a kitchen project than a dining room project. BUT since this is all one space and I don’t want to write a post just for 2 small canvases, I’m sharing them here. The basil and rosemary pictures are from HomeGoods ($16.99/set) and I love how they (plus the roman shade) add a little color to this previously white and boring space.

My biggest project this week was re-refinishing the tabletop. I had to sand the hell out of the top to get the new and old stain off. I’m SO sick of sanding! Once it was finally all sanded down, I did the same white wash/stain treatment as before and it turned out nice, but didn’t match the bench…whomp whomp whomp.

It think the amount of white in the white wash and the amount of drying time changes the finish from being either distressed gray or distressed brown. So, I applied another coat of white wash and stain…and it turned out better, but it's still a little lighter than the bench (although it's hard to tell from the pictures). At that point, I was so over it, so I decided to call it good. I sealed the set with some matte poly to protect the finish I worked so hard on.

Now I just need to move everything out of the garage and set it up inside the house. So I’m doing pretty well on the big projects, but I still have to figure out the accessories and finishing touches and that part always takes me forever to put together… OK, let’s take a quick look at the to-do list:

Buy farmhouse table and matching bench
Refinish table and bench tops
Paint table and bench legs?
Sell old table on Craigslist
Buy 2 wood dining chairs
Paint dining chairs?
Buy 2 upholstered captain’s chairs
Buy/Hang ironstone cup rack
Replace light fixture – maybe?
Sew faux roman shade/valance
Touch up paint

Accessories/finishing touches

  1. Even with plain old stain you can't always tell how one piece of wood will accept it vs another. I'm sure the difference is barely noticeable, so I don't blame to for calling it good! The cup rack is darling. Looking forward to seeing the total package!
